The Theory of Communicative Action (German: Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns) is a two-volume 1981 book by the philosopher Jürgen Habermas, in which the author continues his project of finding a way to ground "the social sciences in a theory of language", which had been set out in On the Logic of the Social Sciences (1967). Jurgen Habermas built the theory of communicative action because he was looking for a way to ground social science within a theory of language. Published in a two-volume book, it would eventually become the foundation of future theories involving law, democracy, and morality. Communicative action serves to transmit cultural knowledge, renew it, and Jurgen Habermas is a German philosopher and sociologist in the tradition of critical theory and pragmatism. He is perhaps best known for his theories on communicative rationality and the public sphere.
